Great question.
I will try my best to give a decent answer.
In 2008, we re-quested several improvements/maintainence items from the parks dept of the city (Brentwood). Concrete tee pads were on that list. At that time nothing on the list got approval or funding. Note that the regular turf mowing has been in their budget from the get-go, but little else.
In 2009, to the best of my knowledge none of those same items have been approved or funded except for two days of maintainence work. 1) Skid loader and dumptruck cleaned up the old public works dumpsite next to fairway 18; 2) a few weeks ago a subcontractor was hired to bush-hog several areas around the treeline.
In Spring of 2009, I received verbal approval from the parks director for the WCDGC to fund and install concrete tee pads. Since the only time we can bring a concrete truck on the course without bogging down in the soft earth is summer, our plan was to rally the club, raise some bucks, hold a tournament, sell some discs, and put in at least 1/4th of the pads --- at the end of the summer.
That plan has met a few roadblocks. In our last meeting with the park director has declared our weekly events, our monthly minis, our club discs sales, and our club work days --- unauthorized.
The meeting and the notice was a bit of a surprise --- to say the least. The club board is 2-3 weeks away from packaging our response. There is still hope that the parks dept and WCDGC can work together for the betterment of the course and the park.
That said, I see no reason why some kind benefactor can't go ahead and write a check for the tee pads. We estimate $4K plus labor on the low side.

Have you any experience with installing/using/maintaining them. Where is the closest course with rubber tees? But, as yet another option ---- (after we work out permission to volunteer on the course again) ------ Thanks to some great connections, and some experienced volunteer help; we may be able to form and pour all 36 pads for a number close to $1,500. One current thought is to hold a fundraising tournament in early summer, and pour them after the course drys out a bit later. Most Do-Able. Thanks, Ron

I played a course in Black Mountain NC that had raised timber cribbing filled with crushed rock and covered with astro-turf. The main advantage, I suppose, is that it drains well. The main disadvantage with raised pads is that you can't use an extra-long run up from off the back of the pad. You might think it blends in well with nature, but turf is much more brilliant green than anything God made. Anyway, we could think about using it in places where mud and drainage might be a problem--#3 white comes to mind.

I agree...........but, with concrete, we wont have to worry about it. once its in, its done, all we need is a broom at each pad.

well if you look before have your ever seen tee pads made out of square patio bricks i think they would be great because i think i had enough brick for two holes for both tee-pads

It does seem like a good idea. But, alas, no. Saw it tried more than once. The prep to get it level is huge. Just like the pads mentioned in NC with astro turf. Got to have a super flat bed of gravel, a way to keep them stable with some kind of safe edging, etc. In the end, it is one of the most unsafe things witnessed. Sure, cost seems like an advantage, but that apple looses its shine pretty quick, when it gets compared to the stability of concrete. BTW, the club has about 2/3 rds of the needed replacement carpet pads right now. Expect some updating soon. Concrete pads? I still see a cooperation package with the city that includes the club providing sports insurance, the city allowing the club to volunteer once again on the course, a big ole fundraising tournament, and some concrete tee pads. Did I think this would have happend last year? Sure, but this year would still be nice. ;D Ron

I've been outta the loop and missed coming to the bag tag blowout round on halloween due to a flat tire after church but just wanted to let yall know i've got several big pieces of carpet if still needed for Crockett. I just had new carpet installed over the weekend and saved any sizable looking pieces of the old that looked large enough for tee pads. Let me know if you want them.

Wow. This is awkward. You see, we (WCDGC) don't have official permission to volunteer on the Crockett Disc Golf Course (part of the official park structure of the City of Brentwood Parks and Recreation Department)
Althought, I have noticed some updated carpet tee pads there lately, so one can only assume it was done by gnomes or elves. And, it would be most unprobable for the park staff to contribute to said tee pads since (in their vast disc golf experience) mud was much better.
So, you and your carpet scraps have a dilemma. What to do? What to do?
The only thought I have is this: Give me a call at 377- two three three seven. Maybe we can come up with a place to leave the carpet so the gnomes can find it.
Thanks, Ron
