I see that Ron brought this up a few years ago. I was wanting to gauge interest and possibly become TD for an ace race in the Middle TN area this fall. I know Liberty has been mentioned, but I was open to suggestions and wanted to see how many of you guys would be interested in doing something like this. If you have no clue what I am talking about, Discraft introduces a prototype disc every year and basically encourages people to go out and make a run at aces for a day. more info here - discgolfacerace.com/index.htmlLet me know if anyone is interested. If I can get 20 or more people, I will make it happen. So far, the course is going to be the main issue. i am hoping by October the bugs at liberty would be less of an issue. But am open to suggestions.

Chad talked with me about this already. I would be interested. Liberty wouldn't be my 1st choice unless it is maintained a bit better than it currently is or I have a hazmat suit to walk around in to avoid the ticks. Whatever course we can get signed up would work though.
Anyone have a list of contacts for each course around town to see which we would be able to use/reserve/etc?

Ace Race events are a lot of fun!! Plus, you get to get a really cool prototype to keep for your collection, then cross your fingers it becomes a popular mold for nostalgic value. I'd love to do another.
On the pessimistic end of things, I'm not sure if Brentwood would allow it at Crockett. Discraft makes an event out of it... banners, representatives, etc... and of course, it's a buy-in because you purchase a disc and players' pack. Brentwood doesn't allow sanctioned events as such. I'm not sure how Franklin would be with Liberty - they're usually more open minded, I think.
Of course, at most Ace Race events, you don't actually throw from the original teeboxes to the baskets. They want lots of aces, not just 1 or 2 for the day. In fact, it's supposed to be an ace tally contest with high numbers desired. They'll put of temporary "tees" at drastically shorter distances... so it's more like a short "fairway ace" contest - mostly depending of what type of disc they're releasing. We demo'd the Discraft Breeze in the early 2000s, which was a mid-to-short range flippy disc. Had the shortened throws.
If we actually had a chance to have one of these, I recommend everyone gets behind it. They're a LOT of fun.
If anyone is pretty unfamiliar with all this, type Discraft Ace Race into Youtube and see what videos come up.

I figured after seeing the potential for weirdness at Crockett--it may not be wise to play there. i am open to even considering other courses in Middle TN. And I fully support shortening holes to increase Aces. I was thinking even somewhere like 2 Rivers with a less than stellar reputation would be good due to the amount of shorter holes.

2 rivers would make a great location
the HV griffen in shelbyville would be a good one too

What about the new course at Fontanel? By that time it will be opened up for awhile and it will help bring recognition not only to the course but that area as a whole.
It's not the closest course to most of us, I know, but would be an option.

Not to be negative about Fontanel--I really want to play it, but have you seen the distances on that course? It is also technically private, so I am not sure what the logistics would look like. At this point I am planning on calling park admins and checking to see which would be the least legwork to make happen. The list is currently Sharp Springs, 7 Oaks, 2 Rivers, Fontanel, Sanders Ferry. Not sure I can get enough time off from the wife to get out to Shelbyville. I will see.

Ace races don't have to be set up from the actual teepads.

Also, I know that the people at Fontanel love the recognition that events bring so I couldn't imagine things being very difficult as far as logistics go.

making a good case. I will move them up the list. I just want to make sure we will have at least 20 people out there before i buy the TD package

I see that Ron brought this up a few years ago. Ron brought this up again recently as a matter of fact. I think it's safe to say he would help in any way necessary, as would I . . . and it will certainly not be a problem to get 20 signed up. When discussing it we were thinking of Liberty (which is a fabulously enjoyable course in the cooler months), but course matters not much to me. It may actually be a bit easier to get permission at a private course (Fontanel) than it would be with the red-tape of municipal parks departments.

I am in!!! And my first course idea was 2 rivers. But now that the idea for Fontanel is out, I think that would be awesome. And, I think they would be open to it seeing they are new and would probably love the attention. Seeing they seem to want tournament recognition this might be a good start for them as it's small.

Fontanel looking better and better. I will lob a call over there this afternoon. Definitely wanting to get exposure and tournament play based on everything I have read.

Just got back in town from Peru.
Ace Race? Good stuff. It is not unusual to have several of them in one city. But, the history around these parts is a bit weak;
Hendersonville held one a few years ago. Not sure if I remember any others.
I would encourage every club to put one on.
That said, I would expect that if WCDGC hosted an Ace Race that it would be on a WC course; which means either Crockett or Liberty.
Liberty would tend to be cooler in the heat and would be less walking. But, Crockett appears easier(IMHO) to set up.
They are typically quick events. Everyone plays 2 round of 18, on an adjusted course set up, but you throw only two throws per hole. In other words, each player using the 2 discs supplied in the players pack --- will throw both of the supplied discs in an "ace run". You count who hits aces or metal. Doesn't take long to play a round.
So, each hole has to be set up in a decent ace run distance. Either by shortening the tee with temp flags or moving up the target with a temp target. I am of the opinion that doing such would require us to reserve the course (close to public play) for a morning. Both courses will allow us to do that, but there is typically more expense and bureaucratic red tap at Crockett. Franklin may be a better choice for that reason alone.
Give us a day or three and we shall get something rolling. As long as other area Ace Races don't schedule on top of each other == the more the merrier. Ron
