Gentlemen, If things go well, we could have the front nine targets installed this Saturday.
True enough though, we still have a short list of other things to do. As in:
Crockett Project List Saturday September 22nd · Trim/prune Red 5 tee area. · Cut up and drag off fallen tree behind 7 A target · Cut up and drag off fallen tree behind 15 target · Cut up and drag off fallen tree behind 17A target · Cut out wire, haul off rusty bicycle in front of 17a target · Trim/prune alley to 10a target · Cut all stumps on holes 3 thru 8 (hopefully Ben can bring his chainsaw) · Install steps on bank of 16 fairway. (John Wood has materials for this- will coordinate) · Install front nine targets.
Please post on the forum if you can make it. 8am Meet in parking lot by the soccer center.
Thanks,
Ron

As of right now, I plan to be there in the morning. I am the scum of the earth. Please feel free to bash away at me for not being there. I was sick all weekend. I'm sorry.

Wait till ya'll see what the TVA mowing monster machine has done!
Whacked a 50' clearance all the way down the power line. I talked to supervisor and he said that the areas they cut is something they do every 3-4 years.
There is a spot or two that has changed what you might call "obstacles" in the course. Most of what got cut has just made it easier to find your disc.
All of the growth behind 14 is gone. The valley of death below 12 tee is gone. The disc eating finger of foliage behind 18 is gone.
The ridge of trees above 11 is also gone. Not sure I like that.
There may be some placement massaging over time, but nothing urgent at all.
Let me know what you think.

Hi everybody. My name is Ron Howell and Im new to this forum and live in Smyrna. I played all 18 at Crockett today for the first time and really enjoyed it. I loved the course layout and cant wait to see the finished job. I had a very hot round of a 46. I threw from all whites except 7,11, and the elevated basket hole(which I would have aced if it was standard height because I hit the pole dead center 4 feet off the ground) I realized we played from a couple wrong tees because when we were leaving we saw the markings for hole 11 on the pathway and remembered them on 7 also. The funny thing was I played like total garbage on the front (27) and shot 19 on the back. I had a huge crush on 18(which is a sweet hole by the way) and ended up going about 100 feet past the basket and basically parking hole 9. I wish I would have realized the whites were there on those other holes because then I might have the course record...maybe. Good job guys, I'll be back to play the course again soon.

Glad you found the course, and at least some number of the baskets.
Bear with us as we wait on our signs. Navigation shouldn't be so challenging. We thought baskets before signs was better than no baskets at all.
And I know what you mean, NOTHING ruins my day like overthrowing 18!

I didnt have any trouble following the course. It flows pretty well and the next tee indicators on the baskets helped. I had played the back nine before and noticed changes on a few of them as well.

Glad you like it. The stongest influence on the course was the changing concept of distance. With increased D from technology and a growing number of LAM's, it is becoming more important to have more holes that make sense for the 400' + drives. If everything is set long (not going to happen often) then we have 6 under 300', 4 under 400', and 8 over 400'. (3 close to 700'.)
For the average 920 rated/300' throwing player --- some of the white tees fall into that less than poplular distance zone called the gray zone. Just beyond thier birdie range, it becomes a "gotta make 3". Not a bad golf skill, just not a lot of score spread. At least for that type player and on those holes.
In other words -- the course got stretched for the growing crowd with longer drives.
More changes on the back nine. #12- (across the valley into the cave tree) becomes a 725' hole. The new target placement is along the tree line towards the soccer building. A John Houk inspired hole. Looks like we slapped about 2 1/2 fairways together. Guilty.
The new tee for 13 is in the corner of the meadow by the building shooting back to the elevated target. 420'. Yeah, Yeah, it needs some dirt at the bottom.
Should be finished soon. Waiting on signs. City connection.
Thanks, Ron
