Every year, when the Michigan Wolverines face the Minnesota Golden Gophers on the gridiron, the Little Brown Jug is at stake. Is there a way to run a similar head-to-head event between disc golf courses? MTDGA and WCDGC seem to have established some regulars, and in the spirit of a friendly rivalry, it might be nice to do an annual showdown of sorts. Put the best/regs from each course up against each other and see who gets to display some ugly [read: sentimental] award for the year?
The courses would need to represent both clubs, but two or four? Sharp Springs v. Crockett? Liberty v. Barfield? Those seem like reasonable splits, with the former two working for long-armers and the latter two offering more timber runs. How many days should the event run?
How would we “team” it? I played tennis in college and we matched our top six against another schools, then ran three doubles matches for a best of nine format. If that’s too many, we could run four singles and three doubles.
More importantly, who plays what spot? Run it by tag numbers? Volunteers? “Ambassadors?” Who decides who plays what seed, etc., and who gets to play doubles? (I think you shouldn’t be allowed to play both on the same course.)
So it’s not just this amorphous idea splatter, I propose the following:
Seven players per team, taken on a volunteer basis. Three play singles, the other four play doubles. Match up against players/doubles, with each round counting as one point. Most points wins. A tie keeps the trophy with defending champs. Play Crockett and Sharp Springs back-to-back in one day in the spring. Play Liberty and Barfield back-to-back in one day in the fall. That provides two chances per year for the trophy to move.
And what should the prize be? I dunno. I’m willing to hit an antique [read: junk] store and spend five bucks on something.
Figure we may as well check the interest level in Williamson County before I try to track down Rob Collier. (He’s the current MTDGA prez, right?) What say you?
(If anyone thinks I’m trying to do this as an ego boost, I look forward to being decimated by Jacky Logan if it ever comes together.)
